The short ton of the US is 2,000 lb, 907 kg, and the long ton of the UK is 2,240 lb, 1,016 kg; a long ton is 20 hundredweight of 112 lb, whereas the US hundredweight is 100 lb. Freight rates and commodity prices state which ton they mean, or should; 'metric ton' in American texts means the tonne.
