Absorbed dose and equivalent dose

The absorbed dose (gray, Gy) is the energy deposited per kilogram of tissue: 1 Gy = 1 J/kg. The equivalent dose (sievert, Sv) weights it by how damaging the radiation is: a factor of 1 for X-rays, gamma rays and electrons, 20 for alpha particles, and between 2.5 and 20 for neutrons. The older units rad and rem are a hundredth of a gray and a sievert respectively and are still used in the United States. For scale: natural background radiation comes to about 2.4 mSv a year worldwide, a chest X-ray to about 0.1 mSv, and a CT scan of the abdomen to about 10 mSv.
