Dynamic and kinematic viscosity
Dynamic viscosity measures a fluid's resistance to flow: water is about 1 mPa·s (= 1 centipoise) at 20 °C, olive oil about 80, honey about 10,000. Kinematic viscosity is the dynamic viscosity divided by the density, in mm²/s (= centistokes), and is what flows out of a viscometer cup; engine oils are graded by it, an SAE 30 oil having 9.3–12.5 cSt at 100 °C. Poise and stokes are the CGS units, named after Poiseuille and Stokes.
