Points, picas and pixels
The point used by software today is the desktop-publishing point, exactly 1/72 in or 0.3528 mm, with 12 points to the pica; a 12 pt font has its em square 12 points high. Continental European printers used the Didot point of 0.376 mm, with 12 to the cicero, and older French and German type is still measured in it. The CSS pixel is fixed at 1/96 in, so 16 px = 12 pt, regardless of the real pixels of the screen, and the twip, 1/20 of a point, is the internal unit of Word and RTF files.
